MUSHROOM HEADPIECE FOR LIVE-ACTION CHARACTER REALISATION OF SAN FROM PRINCESS MONONOKE (1997)
This project was a collaboration with prosthetic makeup artists and a costume designer to produce a fully realised character from Studio Ghibli’s Princess Mononoke (1997). We collaborated on designing character ‘San’ as a concept for a live action production of the film. In the narrative, San is bitten by a possessed boar and becomes infected. This causes worms to grow from her skin. In this headpiece, the worms protrude through her skin in beige within a vein-like component to mimic human skin. The inspiration to include mushrooms in her costume comes from a photograph taken at the Victoria and Albert Museum exhibition ‘Food Bigger than the plate’ (2019), where the mushroom forms contrast from the harsh industrial set up from which they are grown. This reflects the setting of the film, the forest and Irontown.
