Firstcomer is a short film written and directed by Adam Nightingale. It draws on inspiration from Finnish folklore, specifically the eerie concept of etianen which alludes to a doppelgänger whose actions foreshadow ones own. The film in set in the bygone era of rural England and follows ‘The Women’ who finds a cryptic envelope in the woods, containing a lone seed and a safety pin, which pricks her finger, causing her blood to coat the seed. The Women plants the bloody seed in her garden, from there it metamorphises through stages of transformation. The plant holds a creepy resemblance to human flesh, with blood spurting from its roots. In its final stage, the creature is born from the depth of the soil, a doppelgänger: ‘The Other Women’ who takes her place.
